It was hosted by Katy Perry.The 34th annual award show aired live from the venue for the second time in its history. The music video for Taylor Swift's song "Look What You Made Me Do" premiered during the broadcast. Lil Yachty co-hosted the pre-show with Terrence J, Charlamagne Tha God, and MTV News' Gaby Wilson. It was broadcast across various Viacom networks and their related apps.

在格莱美、全美和VMA里，我觉得舞台设计和整体Vi设计最有现代感，也同时最对我胃口的就是VMA了，表演依旧精彩，把音乐从娱乐升华到了道德层面，用音乐来推动社会的进步，这一点中国的主旋律请好好学习??。不过不得不承认的是，水果姐的主持还是略干了
