The discovery of Naomi Kawase’s cinema changed my life and when I met her in Marseille, she graciously offered me a few fragile VHS of her movies.
I like to take them out from time to time and watch them; they allow me to hold on and keep going.
In spring 2002, as I came to present my movies in Alba, I had planned to record an interview of Naomi Kawase for the journal La Lettre du cinéma (The Cinema Letter). Unfortunately, my mini-disc recorder wasn’t working; as a consequence, I had to use my mini DV.
La Lettre du cinéma published the interview but I still had these images, these archives, these voices and words resounding with such distant accents, these landscapes. Therefore, I thought that I could try to turn them into a film taking the form of an “admiration essay”.
