剧情介绍
A jovial, feisty young boy’s idyllic life is suddenly changed when he is given the task to single-handedly save his school from permanent closure by winning a State-level badminton championship when nor he neither his coach have any knowledge of the game. Set amidst the visually vibrant and culturally resplendent state of Rajasthan this is a true story of a village that reexamined its priorities and united to champion one of their own in his daunting mission.
Incredible as it may seem Chidi Ballaa is actually based on a true story. Chidi means “bird” euphemism for shuttlecock, and “ballaa” is the local word for racquet. This is a film that revolves around badminton; a social film that pays a tribute to and wishes the wellbeing of the HERITAGE, ARTS, CULTURE, MUSIC AND SPORTS traditions of Rajasthan.
In the villages the game is played outdoors, usually, using available props for the net. This game is not of much interest to anybody until an unusual situation emerges. The local school is in danger of closure and winning a badminton championship is the only way the school can be saved. The badminton player most likely to win is suddenly thrust into the midst of the school’s dilemma as their unlikely savior. Every member of the village is mesmerized by the situation, normal life across the village ceases and a sense of gloom pervades – that is, until they set their eyes upon our protagonist, 16-year-old Bhagat Pipalwa.
The young lad’s life turns upside down the moment he is informed of the gravity of his must-win state level tournament. From a fun loving, happy go lucky mischievous boy he becomes a tension filled, confused young adult struggling to come to terms with his mission.
The film captures the richness of Rajasthani culture along with its traditions and superstitions. It’s an era of transition when the modern values and ways are yet to filter through. Rajasthan is perhaps the world’s most colourful place and the local filmmaker does justice to it. The uniquely Rajasthani hues are brought out in rich detail and vivacity. Art is magnificently portrayed through the eyes of a French expat and Rajasthan lover, Nadine. Her life’s mission is to restore and protect an ancient art form that the locals are so oblivious to. Her journey provides a wonderful context to the times the film is set in.
The music in the film pays homage to the traditional tribal and folks tunes that have withstood the test of times and are still sung in the homes of common folks.
As the story unfolds people’s perspectives change. Some are inspired and encouraged to plod on to achieve their self-determined goals. The village of Fathepur grows on to become a small town just as the innocent game of Chidi Ballaa transforms to become Badminton in all its glory.
Over the years many great filmmakers have made wonderful films that celebrate the human spirit, this is our attempt to immortalise the awakening of an entire village in the face of a deceitful adversary.
